Inspiration or Burgermaniac !!!!! follow up

Or McGreevy's review

For those out of the loop.... a quick peruse of my earlier post will bring you up to snuff....

Following our "glorious" experience at the Fens yesterday... DeCAF and I traveled the final "1200 Steps From Fenway" to the "home" of Michael T. "Nuf Ced" McGreevy ... although I did forget to count... I'm pretty sure I found I shortcut on the return trip (didn't I, didn't I, DeCAF ?!?!?!) ... gotta love Beantown.....

Our mission ???? My aforementioned "Beckett Burger Battle"... I must admit, it was a contest that I didn't think I could compete in... could YOU eat 6 quarter pounders with cheese ?!?!?!.... but the "novelty" of the idea was more than I could fight....

Do not be fooled by the humble facade of our forefather's rejuvenated establishment... nice touch with the open window over-looking the street, BTW.... Ken Casey has done a truly wonderful job "decorating" the new McGreevy's... this is an absolute mecca of memories of days gone by...

Stepping through the front door, you step into a more than impressive collection of Red Sox, baseball, sports AND Irish punk rock memorabilia... INCLUDING a set off bagpipes (Dropkick Murphys anyone??) enclosed in a glass case amongst other original "paraphernalia"...

Scattered amongst the dozens of high def TVs that line the walls are literally HUNDREDS (numbered mind you) of actual photos and artifacts from yesteryear - most likely Nuf Ced's personal collection revived, .... a row of actual seats from the Fens in the lower bar... just outside the lavatory...... an absolutely beautiful 3 pane stained glass window at the very back - depicting Micheal T McGreevy .... and the piece de resistance.... a wooden statue of "the man" himself (seemingly ALSO an original - it's on wheels, Nuf Ced must have rolled out in front in the early 1900's - or maybe the casters were added later... either way, way too cool).

The menu is equally impressive, offering something for every taste .... from appetizers, soups and salads, sandwiches and entrees... even All Day Breakfast, McGreevy's serves it all...

Although, I knew what I was there for.... So when the very cute waitress asked if we were ready to order... all I said is "I'll have The Big Mouth Beckett Burger... she chuckled and replied... "It's pretty big"... but we both agreed that either way, it was worth the trip and part (apparently $7 !!!) of the $30 price-tag goes to The Beckett Foundation, so it's for a good cause.. plus I knew either way, I'd get a free T-shirt !!!!

DeCAF chickened (or fished, as it were) out in co-effort to BOTH conquer this "sandwich" and subsequently placed an order for the fish and chips.... a decision that would later prove to be another great move ... as the menu states... "Fillets of cod, fried with ale batter & served with hand cut fries, cole slaw and homemade tartar sauce".... excellent choice (of course I HAD to try it) at a modest price tag of $12...

The "home-plate" sized mountain arrived on a platter the size of Fenway Park... accompanied by probably 2 pounds of steak fries... wow were those good !!!!! Equally "impressive" was the height of this masterpiece of culinary (and dietary) mayhem.... later described by DeCAF as an "ottoman"....
But not your ordinary ottoman, mind you.... literally a Frisbee sized slab of ground beef (very lean by the way) topped by 1/4" of cheddar cheese, probably a full head of chopped lettuce, an entire sliced beefsteak tomato, a full cuke worth of sliced dills .... all sandwiched between virtually a LOAF of toasted garlic bread.... Yee HAH !!!!!!!!!

The "cutie" DID promptly explain that the rules for the "conquered" T-shirt did not include the fries... like THAT mattered - this thing was big enough to feed a starving family of 4!!!... but just to give myself a better chance at victory, I had DeCAF hide the fries at the end of the table to avoid temptation...

Long story short.... or not as long as it could be... as the T-Shirt I received clearly states... "I struck out against the Big Mouth Beckett Burger" I got to a point of "comfortable fullness" after completing 3/4 of the "frisbee", about 2/3 of the loaf of bread and about half of the salad... and was dieing to eat some fries !!!! I REALLY didn't want to drive 2 hours home with a gastric-intestinal thing going on.... So, I waived the white flag... or napkin as it were... pushed the remains asides... and indulged in some of the fries to satisfy THAT urge...

The only regret I have was not expressing more curiosity about the decor... perhaps necessitating ANOTHER visit to this fine establishment !!!! This trip was about the burger... but I'll be baaaaaaaaaaaaack...

But I DID ask that cutie just one question..... "Did Josh Beckett finish the burger"... "Uh, yeah he did" she replied.... NUF CED
